Artist Gregory Little

Photographer Mark Potter at Piper Gallery

Gregory Little (b.1956) grew up painting the landscapes, people, and gardens around him in rural Northern Alabama.  Largely self-taught, he has developed his natural abilities through the use of intuition and personal observation.  Gregory has been a resident of Oakland Park, Florida since 1992.  After a career in the decorative arts – painting murals and building furniture, Gregory turned his attention to painting full time in 2001.

“As a painter, I simply observe the world around me. My work is about capturing a moment in time and a sense of place using the alla prima style of painting. Painting outdoors, Plein Air, has helped me to look at my environment with a quick and careful eye and see just how colorful everything really is.  When I stand in one spot for several hours painting, I realize just how fast everything changes.  The sunlight is constantly moving, changing the atmosphere along with the character of all its different colors.  My goal becomes to let spontaneous and energetic brushwork record what I saw and how it felt to be there.”

“My studio paintings of people going about their everyday lives often have a quiet energy about them. The light in my paintings reminds us that even sitting still time is moving, life is changing and we are both a witness and a participant.”
